Gastown

Gastown was the heart of Vancouver’s first city centre. The neighbourhood is named after John Deighton, nicknamed “Gassy Jack”, a sailor and barman who arrived in 1867 to open the neighbourhood’s first bar. The neighbourhood quickly became a commercial hub. It was absorbed by the city of Vancouver in 1886 and was ravaged by the “Great Vancouver Fire” that same year.

The neighbourhood was designated a national historical site of Canada in 2009.

Discover here the famous red-brick streets, Gassy Jack’s statue, the Steam Clock and the Landing merchant hall.
