Freebies: A New Used Goods Place?

Reduce, reuse and recycle: those are the Free Store’s main goals. The free second-hand shop is a new initiative of the University of Ottawa’s department of sustainable development. It contains a surprising amount of used goods, like clothing, dishware, books, small appliances and sports items. Ottawa’s Free Store is an important resource for students. Over 22 tonnes of stuff goes in and out of the Free Store every year, an estimated value of 1.2 million dollars.
Brigitte Morin, recycling coordinator for the department of sustainable development and a cofounder of the Free Store, and Frédérique Rivet, coordinator of the Free Store, explain how the free store can slow waste and overconsumption. A Raphaëlle Mercier production.
