St. Paul`s Catholic Church in Bas-Caraquet, New-Brunswick, has been singled out for demolition by the diocese. It is said to be too expensive or too damaged to repair. A committee was created to evaluate the repairs.

Église Saint-Paul Bas-Caraquet, NB Menacée de destruction
MONIQUE THÉRIAULT est historienne. Elle accorde une entrevue assise dans une église. Au fil de ses propos, des images de l'église Saint-Paul défilent.
Bas-Caraquet est le berceau
du premier établissement
francophone de la province
En 1890, une chapelle en bois
fut construite, mais elle est
vite devenue trop petite
pour les 120 familles.
De 1904 à 1908, le père
Louis-Marie Cantin a décidé
de construire cette imposante
église, de style gothique,
en pierres, qui reproduisait
l'intérieur de la chapelle
de St-Martin de l'abbaye de
St-Sauveur de Redon, de France
et en même temps, c'est
une réplique de la chapelle
du collège de Caraquet.
Nazaire Dugas, un architecte
acadien de Caraquet, en a fait
les plans. Cette imposante
construction a 175 pieds de long
par 60 pieds de large par
95 pieds de haut. Nous avons une
magnifique collection de 27
verrières conçues par André
Perdriau de Montréal qui ont été
installées de 1912 à 1916.
Elles ont une valeur inestimable
et elles peuvent être facilement
comparées aux grandes
Les grandes orgues Casavant,
achetés à St-Benoît du Lac, en
1996, font notre fierté. Elles
servent aussi bien la liturgie
que les concerts
et des conférences.

Nos ancêtres, ces héros des
temps passés, ont su démontrer
par leur courage, le zèle
et surtout la grande foi de
Aujourd'hui, c'est notre
responsabilité de sauver
ce patrimoine religieux et
architectural acadien. Notre
comité de sauvegarde mis en
place par Gilbert Blanchard, en
novembre 2013, a pour but de
ramasser l'argent pour la
réparation de cette église.
Ce patrimoine sera sauvé
uniquement si nous travaillons
ensemble. Si, ensemble, nous
nous impliquons à le conserver.
Lorsque les gens travaillent
ensemble, les montagnes
se changent en or.
